Established in 1976 and located in the Eastern Metropolitan Region of Melbourne, Ashwood School is a coeducational specialist school with a fine reputation in educating students with a mild intellectual disability.  Ashwood School aspires to be a centre of excellence and a school of first choice in the field of special education.  The Ashwood School community is diverse and the students come from a wide geographical area.

The school enjoys the quiet environment of residential Ashwood and is situated in spacious, attractive grounds containing a large sports oval, adventure playground equipment, a basketball court, a cricket net and pitch, bike education facilities and a large sandpit and play area for junior primary students.

Teaching and learning occurs in bright and airy classrooms.  The buildings feature a computer resource centre, a well-equipped library, a visual arts area, two operational food technology kitchens and a canteen, a multipurpose performing arts area, an instrumental music studio, a modern gymnasium and fitness centre, a digital technology room and a functional fruit and vegetable garden with greenhouse.
