Students in the Secondary Department are aged from 13 to 18 years. Teachers and students work together to develop skills of initiative, independence and a sense of pride and purpose. The school encourages students to develop a wide range of skills, knowledge and a growth in social and emotional maturity.Students in Years 7 to 10 follow the Victorian Curriculum and are offered a broad range of age appropriate programs to cater for their individual needs.The following activities and experiences are emphasised:
Many students enter Ashwood School at the Secondary level and much care is taken to develop friendships, responsibility and confidence through the outdoor education and camping program, House system, elective activities and assemblies.
Students in their final two years at Ashwood School undertake a multi-faceted program that develops the key competencies necessary for post-school life. These years are a true transition and aim to assist students to develop confidence and competence in the skills to function in post-school employment, further education and training, leisure and recreation and home and community living.The Year 11 and 12 curriculum involves the students participating in the Vocational Pathways Certificate (VPC). As part of the VPC curriculum, Pathway Programs enable students to practise work and career related skills and enhance personal social skills in a co-operative work environment. These pathways programs include: Hospitality, The Arts, Workplace Technology, Trades and Outdoor and Environmental Studies.In collaboration with parents/carers a post school pathway plan is formulated for all final year students to prepare for the years ahead.
