Secondary School

CO-ORDINATOR
Dianne Wegener

The Secondary school provides for students of age range 13-16 years. It caters for a wide range of skills, knowledge and social/emotional maturity.

Teachers and students work together in developing initiative, independence and a sense of pride and purpose.

ORGANISATION

Our Secondary Department is organised around the pastoral concept of home rooms. The placement of a student in a group is made with due consideration to age, academic skill, social capability and group compatibility.

Staff, in consultation with parents, undertake, formal reviews of a student’s progress and program effectiveness twice yearly. The pastoral care teacher of each home room group is responsible for program co-ordination and welfare of the students.

Many students come to Ashwood for the first time at secondary level, so much care is taken to develop friendships, responsibility and confidence through the "House" system, camping program and assemblies. The core curriculum reflects the curriculum in all Victorian schools. In the Secondary school the following activities and experiences are emphasised:

  • Language/Communication skills
  • Literacy and Numeracy skills
  • Work Experience
  • Vocational Skills Development
  • Weekly Swimming Program
  • Independent Travel Training using public transport
  • Physical Education/Sport/Leisure skills
  • Fitness Program
  • Personal Development
  • Homecrafts/Home Management
  • Socialisation
  • Camping
  • Art/Craft
  • Music
  • Advance Program - incorporating the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
  • Computer Education
  • Wood Technology

The secondary school prepares students for their final two years at Ashwood School in the STEP program.
